Ouch. I was short 1,500 shares and looked at my other monitor for about 15 seconds. By the time I looked back, the stock had spiked 30 cents (10%) due to a completely unpredictable event (an insider bought a boat load of shares), putting me $450K in the red.

I sold 2/3 of my position quickly to reduce my risk in case it spiked even more, then used a scale-up/scale-out strategy to reduce my remaining losses while I waited for it to make a new range and drop from the initial spike.

Ultimately recovered about $110 in losses, but not sure it was worth the extra time and risk. Might have been better to just take the loss, and then find another position to make it back on (even re-enter this stock as a new short position), or scale-up another already winning position.
