Some weird price action on this CL trade. This stock wasn't even in play, it just had support around 78 that I liked. Originally my plan was to get in long at 78.05 with a stop at 77.80 and TP at 79.55. That would've been a 6:1 RR trade.
CL was very weak on the open. During the first 45 minutes, it dropped hard and I was looking to get short right under VWAP. I had my order placed to get filled under VWAP, then a giant green candle pushed price above VWAP as it filled my order. My stop was already broken, and I was worried by the sudden momentum so I got out for a small loss. Good job cutting the loss here and not thinking, "That move up had no volume, it'll come back down soon."
Messy price action with a lot of quick strong bursts upwards then no hold or follow through. A new trader will get stopped out for big losses if they try to intraday trade names like this. This is the kind of stock you swing trade if you trade it at all.
Lesson Learned: Trade stocks in play, not just anything that has a level you like. Trading stocks in play will help you avoid large, instant price swings that aren't even backed by volume. Plan the trade then trade the plan. It should take something meaningful to make you change the plan mid-trade. To make sure the plan is stuck in your head, review the plan premarket, then review it again before you enter a position.
