Executing trades off the wrong time frame. Planning on a 15 min chart, executing on smaller time frames and mis-managing
The concept here is one I have heard discussed a lot and I have not had a ton of experience with but need to continue to grow and learn from. When I am planning a trade, it is important for me to recognize the time frame I am using to plan (daily, 60 min, 15 min, etc) and also be aware of what price path may occur on lower time frames that still fit the theme of the play.
Specifically:
Today I was looking at a set up in AMZN where I was seeing it break out of a consolidation on the 15 min time frame.
On the15 min time frame, AMZN had tested lower and then held above 512.5 which was the resistance I was looking at to confirm for a move higher.
I was executing on a 2 min time frame and recognized AMZN break above that R level and hold higher which is great for the continued strength play I was executing.
Price action tested higher and pulled back stopping me out as I had raised my stop based on the action of the 2 min chart but as I had planned this idea based on the 15 min chart I should have been using the support and resistance levels from that chart as a guide and as long as the action was not saying “stop” or breaking the key levels from where I had planned the trade, I did not really have a reason2sell.
After stopping myself out of the trade on the lower time frame because I did not like the price action on that time frame, AMZN still respected the higher time frame levels and extended up to the initial target of the move at 518.8.
Core idea is, if I am planning a trade on the 15 min time frame, make sure I am allowing the price path to work for me unless there is a real reason2sell on the higher time frame.
This concept may make more sense in my mind than it does here but the core idea is that I need to continue to use the higher time frames to develop my trading plays but also need to understand the potential price paths that I could see on multiple time frames for that play.
It is the difference between a pullback to support in a name trending on higher time frames and a real warning/exit signal for a name that does not have higher time frame support.
